Biography of Zoubida Mouhssin, author of the children's picture books "Duck is Stuck" published by Clavis Publishing, New York.
My name is Zoubida Mouhssin and I was born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1965. I came to Belgium when I was two years old. I had an immediate passion for the French language and literature, without betraying my North-African roots. The fact that I had the privilege to be bathed in two cultures, gave me this love for everything related to language.
That’s why I learned to be a translator for English and Spanish. But French never stopped to be my great love, so when I felt this urge to start writing, French was my language. I started with children’s stories. After that I learned about storytelling. I had the chance to put the theory into practice during after-school activities. I give guidance to ateliers for children, where there always is a mix of creativity, stories and games. I also coordinate intercultural activities for a sociocultural organization.
When in 2015 refugees started arriving in great amounts, it made me think. When I became a volunteer, I met illustrator Pascale Moutte-Baur. We became good friends, and moreover, we made a book together: Kwak in het wak (Duck Is Stuck), about a duck that gets stuck in the ice. In 2016 we were nominated for the Key Colours Award of the City of Hasselt, and now the book is available in the shops.
